What is Pure Term Insurance?
Term insurance is the purest and simplest form of life insurance. You pay a small annual premium to secure a substantial financial cover (e.g. ₹1 Crore to ₹3 Crore) for a specific term (e.g. up to age 60 or 65).
If the insured individual passes away during the term, the entire sum assured is paid out tax-free to the nominees, shielding them from financial distress.
Why You Must Never Mix Insurance with Investment
Traditional endowment or money-back policies attempt to combine insurance with returns. In reality, they offer inadequate life cover (often just 10x the annual premium) while generating an internal return of barely 4% to 5% p.a., lagging inflation.
By contrast, separating pure term insurance (for protection) and mutual funds (for wealth creation) results in far superior financial outcomes.
How Much Life Cover Do You Actually Need?
A healthy rule of thumb is 15 to 20 times your current annual income, plus the outstanding balance of your home loan or debts, plus future major milestones like children's higher education.
Costly Mistakes to Avoid While Applying
• Concealing smoking/tobacco or medical conditions to save a nominal premium amount
• Selecting policy tenure till age 85 or 99 when dependents are no longer financially reliant
• Skipping critical illness or accidental disability riders that provide living benefits
